The main types of malocclusion

The foundations of modern orthodontics were laid back in the 1890s. In those years Dr Edward Angle divided malocclusions into three classes. This classification remains relevant today. Dr Angle defined three classes of anomalies:

Class 1 — a normal molar relationship with an incorrect occlusal line due to incorrect tooth positioning.

Class 2 — the lower molars are positioned distally relative to the upper teeth; the occlusal line is not established.

Class 3 — the lower molars are positioned mesially (i.e. pushed forward and closer to the midline) compared with the upper teeth; the occlusal line is not established.

Crowding — besides Class 1-3 disorders, crowding of the front teeth is also common, manifesting as a diastema and other anomalies that have a noticeable cosmetic defect and require correction by orthodontic specialists. Types of braces

By the material used, there are:

Braces are also classified by type of fixation:

Ligature systems, which include elements that bind the archwire to the brackets. Fitting such a system means changing the ligature after some time, since the fixation of the archwire weakens over time.
